Braunschweig, Germany – December 7, 2021: With the new dqMan, users can expect the release of a revised version providing compatibility to current OpenText Documentum applications and feature enhancements like a new user interface offering an improved user experience.

dqMan has been on the market for 18 years as a free administration tool for OpenText Documentum customers to administrate, maintain, and program the Documentum Content Server. When OpenText introduced the 20.X Cloud Edition, dqMan did not provide a stable compatibility with the OpenText Documentum platform. In order to further support current OpenText Documentum versions and provide an enterprise-grade software product, fme AG has decided to enhance and commercialize the product.

“By developing the new dqMan version, we are able to offer our users a connection to the current OpenText Documentum environment”, explains Florian-Piaszyk-Hensen, Director of fme Products. “Packed with useful functionalities to further simplify administration processes within OpenText Documentum, the new dqMan is created as a professional product for Open Text Documentum experts and will fulfill all aspects of an enterprise software in terms of reliability, compatibility, and quality,” he continues.

Along with the enhanced dqMan, fme will introduce a dedicated support and maintenance service which has been frequently requested by customers over the last years. This additional service allows enterprises to use dqMan in a more reliable, riskless, and professional manner and ensures the compatibility with the latest OpenText Documentum releases.

In addition, the revised dqMan will come with a new, modern user interface. Designed to be more intuitive for its users, it will include a flexible search and navigation option through the repository and improve the user experience. The support for Unicode languages will also be part of the new product version. Furthermore, dqMan will support additional platform and script languages like Veeva VQL and Microsoft PowerShell in the near future.

Tillmann Rehm, Principal Consultant at fme AG and responsible for the development of dqMan, summarizes the benefits of the upcoming version as follows: “The main benefit on the technical side will be the full native support for x64-based environments including Java, Documentum/DFC up to the latest version (currently 21.4), and latest server operation systems. Also, extended character sets will be available. Of course, dqMan will get a modern UI, enhanced usability, and bug fixing. For the first time, fme will also offer support and maintenance to all registered users.”

The release of the new dqMan commercial version is planned for the second quarter of 2022 and will replace the current free version. Further product information will soon be available on a dedicated landing page containing purchase options and a support channel.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a topic that gained a lot of popularity in the computer science field in the last years. Before using AI, the experts had to find the best rules to make the program run in a way that fulfilled the user requirements. Now, people discovered the power of this technology and learned how to configure it to generate the necessary rules. The repetitive steps are automated and a model is generated based on the real data. The beauty of this technology is that even people that are not experts in the domain can use the computer to model their data.

Natural language processing (NLP) is a subfield of artificial intelligence that aims to analyze and understand human language. The computer is capable of processing a large number of documents, extract relevant information, and organize the documents themselves.

The content migration process can be simplified by using artificial intelligence capabilities. Sometimes the target ECM application requires attributes that are not present in the source platform and manual processing of the documents is necessary to identify these attributes. To help the users solve this issue, we implemented a new Enrich Scanner into migration-center which uses Amazon Comprehend capabilities.

Complex migration projects can be very painful and expose many challenges. One of such challenges refers to incomplete, incorrect, or simply not existing metadata in the source system. To fix incomplete metadata or enrich your data quality during the migration process, we launched a new migration-center integration and service element recently.

With the help of our Amazon Comprehend natural-language processing (NLP) integration and our new services package, we are able to deliver an end-to-end solution to classify your documents and enrich your metadata according to your individual needs. The service can identify critical elements in your documents, including references to language, people, places, or other relevant topics. In addition, Amazon Comprehend can be customized to identify metadata that are specific to your domain (e.g. documents types, products, projects etc.). With the integration of Amazon Comprehend Medical we are also able to identify medical information, such as medication and medical conditions, from a variety of sources (including doctor’s notes) and determine their relationship to each other.

Whenever you plan to migrate your content, our new end-to-end solution is a very effective option to increase the quality of the migration outcome or simply ensure that important documents are classified accurately and have the necessary metadata to support the need to quickly and effectively identify documents associated with key business processes.

In the age of digitalization the technical possibilities for collecting, storing, analyzing, and sharing information have taken on new dimensions. However, the trend of digitalization comes with high growth of data volume and produces an increasing amount of inactive or obsolete data. Therefore, separating active from inactive data becomes a necessary step within content management strategies. The necessity of a solid data archiving solution remains ubiquitous.

migration-center receives four updates a year, one each quarter. Beginning of July our development team published the latest release 3.17 which added quite some interesting enhancements to our product. Up next, you can find a selection of some of the most desired changes. For a complete overview, we have also published the complete release notes online.

  • The planned dedicated connector for Hyland OnBase has been released. It supports the import of documents and their revisions as well as delta migration for metadata.
  • migration-center 3.17 now contains an Amazon Comprehend Enrich adapter to enrich documents’ metadata based on the content, to detect languages, to extract entities, and to support custom classifiers.
  • The Documentum scanner now allows more flexible queries for selecting documents to be scanned.
  • The Cara importer now allows the import of audit trails from OpenText Documentum as audit trail objects.

Content migrations between ECM systems, file shares, databases, and other legacy applications usually take on very complex dimensions in a business context. Today we want to find out what challenges but also opportunities content migrations offer to organizations.

One of the leading international manufacturers of commercial vehicles used an internal application to manage and track the lifecycle of their hardware assets, such as cell phones, printers, and Desktop PCs. The application documented the entire lifecycle from acquisition, operation and maintenance, refurbishing, and redistribution to dismantling.

As part of their innovation and move to the cloud strategy the client introduced a new asset management system, but still needed to refer to the original application to access older data that was not part of the migration to the new system. However, this very specific and not frequent use case was in no reasonable relation to the ongoing maintenance costs for the old system and led to the adverse situation of having to pay for two systems instead of reducing costs.

Most document management systems (DMS) include so-called audit trails, a mechanism for keeping track of changes made to an object or a document by the respective author. These changes could be entries such as create, modify, check-in/out, and save. Within a migration it might be a requirement to “copy” the audit trail entries as well. Let’s see how easy it is to manage this challenge with migration-center!

    Inplace migrations enable the user to transform the documents of a repository in order to update various attributes and rules (e.g. auto-naming etc.).
  • The latest versions (20.4) of the OpenText products are now supported and include Content Suite, Documentum, and InfoArchive.
  • A dedicated connector for Hyland OnBase is being planned for one of the upcoming releases.

When I joined the products team at fme AG back in 2011, we had just released version 3.2 of our migration-center and we were already thinking about a new major release (“4.0”) with a modernized architecture and a new client application.

10 years and three attempts later, we are finally close to release the new web client for migration-center. Why did this take so long? Well, we are a rather small team of eight software developers, QA and support agents and we had to learn the hard way that maintaining and continuing development of such a complex software AND rebuilding large parts of the software with a new architecture from scratch is not possible. Thus, we decided to modernize migration-center step by step and focus on a new web client first. This new webUI is a real milestone for us and our customers, since it will allow us to provide a state-of-the-art user interface and to add many new features to migration-center in the future.
