As mentioned in one of our previous blogposts, we decided quite a while ago to replace the desktop client with a new and modern user interface – one that’s more intuitive and provides better usability.
For quite some time, we focused on developing new connectors and enhancing the functionality of the existing ones. As a result, migration-center now supports the main ECM platforms in the market. However, in the last two years we also focused on extending migration-center’s core capabilities by developing a brand-new WebUI. We finally released it officially in early July.

2022-04-28 | BLOGPOST ➤ Content migration is an opportunity, not a like-for-like copy exericse
When organizations take the decision to migrate content to a new, modern system – whether to retire end-of-life legacy systems, or as part of a broader digital transformation journey – the temptation is to view this as a large ‘copy’ operation. The assumption is that all content from the old system will be ported across to the new environment, like for like.
This is not only to vastly over-simplify the undertaking; it also misses the opportunity to rethink the way companies and teams capture and manage content, and to thereby transform business processes.
Read more and benefit from five tips to optimize your content migration project outcomes.

2022-04-21 | PRODUCT INFORMATION ➤ Spring Framework vulnerability CVE-2022-22965: migration-center 3.17 update 4 available
Is migration-center affected by the Spring Framework vulnerability CVE-2022-22965?
A new vulnerability was discovered recently in Spring MVC and Spring WebFlux and published on the the Spring official site.
Since migration-center Jobserver is not running in a Tomcat and it’s not packaged in a traditional WAR it may not be affected by this vulnerability. Nevertheless, since this vulnerability might be exploited in different ways, our development team prepared an update package to upgrade the affected Spring dependencies to the latest version that is not affected by this vulnerability.
The list of adapters that use spring-core and spring-beans jars (directly affected by the vulnerability) are:
- Database Scanner
- Sharepoint Online Scanner
- Veeva Scanner
- Generis Cara Importer
- Sharepoint Batch Importer
- Sparta Trackwise Importer
- Veeva Importer
If one of the above adapters is used, the recommended actions are:
- Downgrade to Java 8 if possible
- Upgrade to migration-center 3.17 update 4
Updating from version 3.17 Update 3 requires replacing only the Jobserver component.
2022-03-31 | BLOGPOST ➤ The painful cost of overestimating data quality in migration
Without top-grade data, even the most innovative life sciences company in the world will struggle to realize its potential. That’s because, without robust, reliable and well-maintained information, formatted in a consistent and agreed way that’s acceptable to regulators, they will fail to complete clinical trials or gain market authorization.
2022-03-08 | BLOGPOST ➤ Give data migration its own RFP
Improved dynamism is now a strategic priority in life sciences. The Covid-19 response has seen a radical transformation of the drug development and approval process – reducing cycles that once spanned 10 years to a matter of months. Going forward, pressure on major authorities such as the FDA will only increase as all stakeholders look to maintain the current pace of innovation.
2022-02-16 | BLOGPOST ➤ Essential steps to migrate your exotic DMS
Does anyone still have an old, maybe outdated system, platform, or document management system (DMS) in their IT environment? We do.
In order not to name a specific manufacturer, I call it an exotic system. Why? Because it has been running for a long time and if I ask our apprentices (young people) they won’t even know what it is unless they have to work with it.
With “exotic systems” I also just may refer to the DMS that Gartner doesn’t mention in the Magic Quadrant for Content Services Platforms.
So, you’re using one of those exotic DMS. And you’re thinking of replacing it but aren’t sure if it’s possible to export and keep your data? Here is an overview of what to consider. If you have any questions while reading, just contact us.
2022-02-10 | DATASHEET ➤ The machine learning improved migration process
Complex migration projects expose different challenges – one of them refers to the metadata or classification of unstructured content like Microsoft Office, PDF documents, or images. Those metadata are often incomplete, incorrect, or simply do not exist in the source systems. During the migration process, much more effort is needed to fix incomplete metadata because it must be added manually, or external data sources are required to complete the missing information.
However, enhancing the unstructured content with meaningful content is highly recommended to sustain the integrity of the application’s data. At this point, machine learning based natural language processing comes into play – a machine learning supported classification process can reduce this effort dramatically.

A leading global healthcare company was having difficulty in tracking their regulatory submissions which are managed across different systems. 2021-12-14 | PRODUCT INFORMATION ➤ Impact of log4j vulnerability - migration-center 3.14 or higher not affected
Various information security news outlets reported on the discovery of the critical vulnerability CVE-2021-44228 within the Apache log4j library. This vulnerability also named as log4shell or logjam is a remote code execution (RCE) class vulnerability. If exploited it may grant attackers the ability to execute arbitrary code and potentially take full control of the system (Source: CVE & Apache).
We would like to inform you proactively that your migration-center installation is not affected by this critical vulnerability if you run migration-center 3.14 and higher. From this version onwards log4j is not being used by migration-center anymore.
Starting with version 3.14 migration-center uses logback instead of log4j for logging. Nevertheless, when searching for “log4j” within the migration-center installation you may find three log4j jar files:
These files are installed as part of some third-party libraries for our Veeva target and our database source connector but are not being used by the product itself. Should you still have any concerns regarding these files, you can simply remove them from the directories without effecting the migration-center Jobserver functionality.
migration-center 3.13 and older versions use log4j 1.2.17. It is not yet clear if this version is affected by the current vulnerability. In any case it is highly recommended to upgrade migration-center to 3.14 or a later version!

2021-10-15 | BLOGPOST ➤ Improve data quality during a content migration by using Amazon Comprehend
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a topic that gained a lot of popularity in the computer science field in the last years. Before using AI, the experts had to find the best rules to make the program run in a way that fulfilled the user requirements. Now, people discovered the power of this technology and learned how to configure it to generate the necessary rules. The repetitive steps are automated and a model is generated based on the real data. The beauty of this technology is that even people that are not experts in the domain can use the computer to model their data.
Natural language processing (NLP) is a subfield of artificial intelligence that aims to analyze and understand human language. The computer is capable of processing a large number of documents, extract relevant information, and organize the documents themselves.
The content migration process can be simplified by using artificial intelligence capabilities. Sometimes the target ECM application requires attributes that are not present in the source platform and manual processing of the documents is necessary to identify these attributes. To help the users solve this issue, we implemented a new Enrich Scanner into migration-center which uses Amazon Comprehend capabilities.

A leading global biotech company acquired many document management systems through acquisitions and siloed development. Some were integrated into other systems; many were proprietary, and some were homegrown. Support was difficult, expensive and a challenge to manage. Some systems were at risk due to obsolete technology and infrastructure. Most importantly, there was no authoritative global source of controlled documents and no global processes to manage Quality and Manufacturing (Q&M) or Research and Development (R&D) documents.

2021-07-13 | WEBINAR ➤ How to fix incomplete metadata or enrich your data quality during a migration project
Complex migration projects can be very painful and expose many challenges. One of such challenges refers to incomplete, incorrect, or simply not existing metadata in the source system. To fix incomplete metadata or enrich your data quality during the migration process, we launched a new migration-center integration and service element recently.
With the help of our Amazon Comprehend natural-language processing (NLP) integration and our new services package, we are able to deliver an end-to-end solution to classify your documents and enrich your metadata according to your individual needs. The service can identify critical elements in your documents, including references to language, people, places, or other relevant topics. In addition, Amazon Comprehend can be customized to identify metadata that are specific to your domain (e.g. documents types, products, projects etc.). With the integration of Amazon Comprehend Medical we are also able to identify medical information, such as medication and medical conditions, from a variety of sources (including doctor’s notes) and determine their relationship to each other.
Whenever you plan to migrate your content, our new end-to-end solution is a very effective option to increase the quality of the migration outcome or simply ensure that important documents are classified accurately and have the necessary metadata to support the need to quickly and effectively identify documents associated with key business processes.
2021-07-08 | BLOGPOST ➤ Migration Matters - Does a decommissioning solution really pay off?
In the age of digitalization the technical possibilities for collecting, storing, analyzing, and sharing information have taken on new dimensions. However, the trend of digitalization comes with high growth of data volume and produces an increasing amount of inactive or obsolete data. Therefore, separating active from inactive data becomes a necessary step within content management strategies. The necessity of a solid data archiving solution remains ubiquitous.
For this we talked to Antje Dwehus, Principal Consultant and archiving expert at fme group since 2006.

2021-05-12 | BLOGPOST ➤ Project Insights - Decommissioning an IT asset management application
One of the leading international manufacturers of commercial vehicles used an internal application to manage and track the lifecycle of their hardware assets, such as cell phones, printers, and Desktop PCs. The application documented the entire lifecycle from acquisition, operation and maintenance, refurbishing, and redistribution to dismantling.
As part of their innovation and move to the cloud strategy the client introduced a new asset management system, but still needed to refer to the original application to access older data that was not part of the migration to the new system. However, this very specific and not frequent use case was in no reasonable relation to the ongoing maintenance costs for the old system and led to the adverse situation of having to pay for two systems instead of reducing costs.
2021-05-03 | BLOGPOST ➤ Best practice to migrate audit trail entries with migration-center
Most document management systems (DMS) include so-called audit trails, a mechanism for keeping track of changes made to an object or a document by the respective author. These changes could be entries such as create, modify, check-in/out, and save. Within a migration it might be a requirement to “copy” the audit trail entries as well. Let’s see how easy it is to manage this challenge with migration-center!

2021-03-17 | BLOGPOST ➤ migration-center WebUI - Good things come to those who wait
When I joined the products team at fme AG back in 2011, we had just released version 3.2 of our migration-center and we were already thinking about a new major release (“4.0”) with a modernized architecture and a new client application.
10 years and three attempts later, we are finally close to release the new web client for migration-center. Why did this take so long? Well, we are a rather small team of eight software developers, QA and support agents and we had to learn the hard way that maintaining and continuing development of such a complex software AND rebuilding large parts of the software with a new architecture from scratch is not possible. Thus, we decided to modernize migration-center step by step and focus on a new web client first. This new webUI is a real milestone for us and our customers, since it will allow us to provide a state-of-the-art user interface and to add many new features to migration-center in the future.
2021-03-04 | WEBINAR ➤ How test data management can be successfully automated with migration-center
Test data management is the process of managing the data that is required to fulfill the test requirements with as little human intervention as possible and is a common process among many organizations. For this process accessible, up-to-date, and high quality test data has to be created regularly in order to meet the requirements of a proper testing process.
Register today for our latest webinar to see how migration-center can support you in setting up a fully automated test data management including time-based schedules, specifying the scope of documents, manipulation of metadata, and a delta/update mechanism!

2021-02-10 | BLOGPOST ➤ Learning to let go: How decommissioning and archiving makes you feel lighter
Minimalism is a trend nowadays and organizing consultants like Marie Kondo and their decluttering methods have thousands of followers that are eager to learn how to discard of unnecessary items. Who hasn’t thought about living in a Tiny House which seems so much more manageable than the daily chaos in many average households?
The fact is, in today’s world of information overload and complexity, many people wish for more simplicity – in their private lives, but also in the office. This desire for simplicity makes perfect sense.
The satisfying feeling of relief we have when the garage is finally cleared out and our old furniture has been disposed of at the local dump and we can also achieve this in our working lives, if we allow ourselves to let go of old and obsolete stuff.
